Move over rose gold! It’s time to welcome back the yellowy-toned precious metal that’s been a firm favourite for centuries.

This season, we’re witnessing a shift in metallics as we move away from pink and copper tones in favour of gold and brass. But when using these bold metal finishes in our interior design, we needn’t feel limited to candlesticks and picture frames. Gold can be utilised in many different forms, including wallpaper, flooring, soft furnishings and unique accessories. And whether you prefer a crafty, earthy finish or a more polished look, gold is the perfect choice. Let’s discuss…

Artisanal gold

While it was once an indication of wealth, nowadays, gold is easily attainable in your home. Previously, we’ve associated the colour gold with opulence, and while this still rings true for the luxe look, there’s a new type of gold on the scene. Drawing inspiration from Africana, colonialism and craftsmanship, this artisanal style utilises gold in a more laid-back and earthy way.

Burnished and antique golds allow us to express ourselves, whether that’s a passion for retro, a love of artisan crafts, or memories of travel and exploration. Nodding towards Morocco, Africa and the Middle East, these true gold tones are exotic and exciting, bringing an experimental twist to our homes.

Of course, while usage of gold in this artisanal way can invoke a sense of Saharan sands and Eastern sunrises, it may also conjure up an image of an English landscape in autumn, or a fire lit Scandi cottage in the depths of winter. The artisanal gold trend is versatile and flexible, allowing us to interpret it in a way that best suits our interior tastes.

Luxe gold

On the flip side, the luxe gold look showcases gold in a more classical way. Inspired by the glitz and glam of the 1920s, this style brings a luxurious touch with its high shine metallics and sumptuous velvets and silks. These rich fabrics, colours and finishes invite us to relax and enjoy the space, as we would in a 5* hotel.

The luxe gold look is a great choice for those with a penchant for Art Deco, mid-century modern and boutique hotel style.

Though it exudes elegance and glamour, it can have a masculine edge, which is channelled through straight lines, geometric patterns and deep, dark colours. But these team brilliantly together, balancing the masculinity with something more warm and inviting.

How to style gold interiors

Lighting and hardware are some of the most popular candidates for a gold infusion. Cushions, throws and soft furnishings also work well, especially if they feature a gold thread running through the fabric. Gold paint is an adventurous option, whilst a gold-toned wood flooring is more understated and natural. Natural woodgrain always works wonderfully with gold, too, whether you prefer a more rustic or glamorous style.

When it comes to colour palettes, your golden style will tone well against teal, deep green, chalky black and midnight blue. Team it with red for a more extravagant expression, mix with wine and terracotta for an earthier feeling, or up the luxe even more with jewel tones like emerald, sapphire and ruby. If you would prefer play it safe, go with neutrals; cream, taupe and grey always work well. Another effective option is white or black. Monochromes are always win-win combinations with gold. Don’t forget, gold can also be good friends with silver – forget about what you’ve previously been told about mixing metals!

You may wish to introduce gold through accessories, but don’t be scared to inject it with larger statements. Your window treatments are a good option, and will help your gold tones to sheen and shimmer with natural light. Here are some of our favourite gold-toned products:
