What is Global Recycling Day?

March 18th marks Global Recycling Day 2022, a special day that celebrates a key component of the circular economy and its efforts to reduce waste. By reducing waste and recycling old products into new, high-quality items, we can benefit societies around the globe, and you can take part very easily. Let’s check out how!

What are the main aims of Global Recycling Day?

According to the Global Recycling Foundation the mission of Global Recycling Day, is twofold:

1. To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue, and that a common, joined up approach to recycling is urgently needed.

2. To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around us – until this happens, we simply won’t award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve.

Tips for recycling at home

In a busy world, recycling can feel like an extra chore, but it’s quite easy.

First, its important to note that many plastic bags can’t be recycled in the conventional way of popping them in your recycling bin. This is because plastic bags can get caught in machinery and shut down the equipment. To recycle plastic bags, check for your nearest carrier bag collection point.

An important thing to remember when recycling is to ensure everything is clean, dry and empty. If you’re recycling food packaging, ensure you rinse off any residue – it doesn’t have to be crystal clean but too much waste food can make a full load unnecessarily unrecyclable.

If you’re recycling plastic bottles, one of the best ways to make the process easier is to squash the bottles – which stops them from rolling off conveyor belts – and then to screw the lids back on.

For readers local to us here in Wakefield you can learn more on the council website, but for those further afield your local authority will have more relevant information for you! With that in mind, is there anything else you can do at home to better help the environment and reduce waste? In short, the answer is yes!

Add recycled items into your home

More and more items are being recycled and repurposed to enjoy a second life. Running shoes, skateboards, and even bicycles are being made from recycled materials, but you can also add items to your décor that keeps materials out of landfill.

At Blinds Direct, we’re proud to offer an exciting range of high-quality products created with recycled fabrics. The polyester used in many of our striking Roman blinds, curtains and even lampshades is made from recycled plastic bottles – or other materials. This helps to reduce landfill and wider damage to our seas and oceans.

We’ve perfected the use of recycled plastics in many of our products. You can browse our recycled fabrics collection here. Look out for our eco-friendly icon for relevant products. What’s more, there is no difference in the aesthetic beauty or quality of any item using recycled materials – same beauty, less waste!

Recycled packaging

Making the most of recycled materials is a cornerstone of the sustainable steps we take at Blinds Direct. Beyond using recycled materials in the creation of many of our products, we also use them in our packaging.

Ensuring your new blinds, curtains, lamp shades or cushions  arrive in the perfect condition, we make the most of quality packaging to protect it from wear and tear in transit. At least 80% recycled materials are used for packaging every item, helping you to limit the effect of your purchases on the environment even further!
