Halloween is fast upon us and with it the spooky season of the year! While many of us are making temporary decorative changes, can we take long term inspiration from gothic glamour? In this blog we’re going to take a closer look at gothic glam and investigate the options available to you to capture the darker side of interior design without anything feeling too Addams Family past October 31st…

What is gothic style interior design?

When we think of Gothic style, we often imagine dark, brooding castles and ornate, mystical cathedrals. It’s a very grandiose style that might initially feel unattainable. That said, Gothic interior design isn’t just reserved for lofty historic structures or its caricature in Halloween décor. In fact, Gothic glamour has found its way into contemporary interior design, offering a unique and captivating approach to home aesthetics. This style seamlessly blends vintage elegance with a hint of the mysterious, creating spaces that exude drama and sophistication.

The essence of gothic glamour

Gothic glamour, as an interior design style, draws inspiration from the architectural and design elements of the Gothic period, which originated in the 12th century and flourished through the 16th century. This style is characterised today by its use of dark, rich colours, ornate detailing, and a touch of the dramatic. These are ideal for modern homes, especially those that feature traditional themes, that’s not to say contemporary interiors can’t benefit from Gothic glamour.

Some key elements of Gothic glamour include:

Dark Colours: Rich, deep colours like ebony, burgundy, deep purple, and emerald green are quintessential to Gothic inspired spaces. These hues create a sense of opulence and intimacy that sets the tone for the style.

Heavy Textiles: Velvet, silk, and brocade fabrics are often used in Gothic glamour interiors. They add a sense of luxury and create a tactile contrast with the dark colour palette. For best results, add heavy fabric Roman blinds and curtains with matching lamp shades!

Ornate Details: Gothic design features intricate patterns, ornate carvings, and elaborate motifs. These details can be incorporated into furniture, window dressings, and architectural elements. Dark florals or paisleys in dark, embroidered fabrics are ideal, but geometrics will add a gothic twist to more contemporary homes.

Lighting up the dark: Chandeliers, candelabras, and candle sconces are popular lighting choices in Gothic glamour interiors, but they’re not something that can be easily added to a home. For an easy gothic addition to your lighting, look at quality lamp shades in dark, patterned fabrics with a brush copper metallic inner.

Incorporating gothic glamour into your home

Now that you understand the core essence of Gothic glamour, it’s time to bring this intriguing style into your home. Here are some steps to follow showcasing how to do so easily and effectively:

  1. Don’t be scared of the dark: Paint your walls in deep, moody shades to set the Gothic tone. Deep purples, blacks, and dark blues work well. You can continue this step at the windows with dark blinds and shutters! Dark wood, like mahogany or ebony, is an excellent choice for shutters and wooden blinds alongside furniture and bookcases.
  1. Accessorise the space: Gothic interior design is by definition on the darker side of the spectrum, so using accessories well will add depth and points of interest to the space. Accessories such as portraits, tapestries, and ornate mirrors are excellent starting points but don’t forget about softer accessories. Some metallic cushions in a dark space can look sublime.
  1. Know what you want your furnishings to do: While we’ve focused heavily on the style elements of Gothic design, it’s important to also focus on what you want your blinds or curtains to do. At Blinds Direct we have a wide selection of special fabrics that can keep your room warmer, darker, easier to clean and more. If you add a curtain to this decor in a living room, you can’t beat a free blackout lining.
  1. Balance the Look: While Gothic glamour thrives on drama, it’s essential to maintain balance. Don’t overcrowd your space with too many dark or ornate elements. Use contrasting colours or lighter accents around the room to prevent your space from feeling too heavy.
