Blinds you shouldn’t use in your bathroom

The perfect bathroom blind should be moisture proof, easy to clean and resistant to warping and rust. It should also provide excellent privacy levels. Unfortunately, not all window treatments fit the bill. So which blinds are worst for your bathroom?

Wooden blinds and shutters

Your bathroom is one of the most moisture-prone rooms in your home, subject to plenty of splashes, spills and humidity. The temperature of this room will also change frequently. This means that any natural wood will be likely to warp and crack, as its porous surface absorbs moisture. Your real wood window treatments may also develop mould and mildew, which can be a real problem in bathrooms. That’s why we recommend you steer clear of wooden blinds and shutters in your bathroom – they won’t last for very long in these wet and humid conditions!

Roman blinds and curtains

Much like wood, soft fabrics will absorb and trap moisture, which can be detrimental to the fibres. It can also lead to the build up of mould and mildew. With this in mind, Roman blinds and curtains should be avoided when dressing your bathroom windows, unless you have a large, well ventilated bathroom and the window is located far from the water source.

Of course, remember that curtains are unlikely to offer full privacy (unless they’re completely closed), which is particularly important if your bathroom is on the ground floor or overlooked by neighbours. And even if your bathroom windows have frosted glass, curtains are not ideal for providing the flexibility of privacy levels and light control that you require.

Metal blinds

Unless your metal Venetian blinds are crafted from high quality aluminium and high grade plastic, you should avoid installing them in your bathroom. That’s because other types of metal, including steel, are likely to rust if they are exposed to moisture regularly. If you can’t guarantee that a Venetian blind is totally water resistant, do not choose it for your bathroom. Fortunately, the metal Venetian blinds at Blinds Direct are 100% aluminium, so you can certainly use them in your bathroom without worrying about rusting.

The best blinds for bathrooms

Instead of looking to wood and fabric for dressing your bathroom windows, choose a more suitable material such as faux wood or waterproof PVC. These materials are inherently moisture resistant and easy to clean, so you needn’t worry about water damage and the development of mould. Our faux wooden blinds come in a variety of colours and finishes, so you can choose the perfect style for your bathroom. Each blind is also made to measure, ensuring a seamless fit for maximum privacy.

Meanwhile, our collection of PVC roller blinds offers an endless choice of colours and prints, bringing more excitement into your bathroom. Each roller blind is crafted with the highest quality fabric and hardware, offering excellent functionality for the long term. Here are some of our brand new PVC roller blinds, the AquaLuxe collection, which we’ve just launched:

You might also want to consider a waterproof vertical blind, which is a great choice for obscuring views from outside whilst maintaining a gentle filter of light and fresh air. And if your bathroom has a roof window, take a look at our range of blinds that are compatible with all leading manufacturers including Velux. It is worth noting that if the fabric isn’t 100% water resistant, you’ll have to be more mindful about cleaning regularly to avoid the build up of mould and mildew.

If you’re on the hunt for a new bathroom blind, we can help. We also offer a range of high quality, made to measure products for other areas of the home. Happy shopping!
