Pastel tones are calming and refreshing, creating a soft interior look that works in many spaces throughout the home.

Pastels provide a warm welcome that still remains fresh and bright. These calm hues, which include blossom, duck egg, shell and lavender, bring a feeling of gentle simplicity to your decor. The soft sugariness of pastels makes them playful and feminine, and though they can often feel more appropriate for spring and summer, pastels will create a tranquil and cosy space all year round.

One of the best ways to utilise pastel colours is with your soft furnishings, such as curtains, blinds and cushions. If your space is very neutral, a few pops of pastel are sure to lift the look. You can also mix these shades with darker hues for a more grounded feeling; black, gunmetal and the darkest shades of blue and green work well.

In terms of style, the contrast between pastel shades and mid-century modern or industrial interiors is very effective. For a more pared-back Scandinavian look, combine your pastel palette with natural finishes and textures like wood and linen. Pastels aren’t just for shabby chic or country cottage interiors!

Of course, one of the most playful approaches to pastels is with motifs like bunting, hot air balloons, buttons, tractors and mores. These charming patterns – which are perfect for window dressings and soft furnishings – nod towards simpler times, when community was a key focus, with street parties and summer fetes being the biggest events on the calendar. 1950s-inspired designs lend a relaxed, retro feeling to your space. You could also introduce your pastels through florals and geometrics, which continue to provide a fresh and fun approach to decor.
