Without particularly wanting to use this cliché, winter is coming and with it comes shorter days and extended periods of darkness. The good news however is with a little bit of planning, you can maximise your living room layout to add a bit of seasonality with lampshades and cushions!

Why mix up your living room layout now?

While many are looking ahead to another ghoulish Halloween or bonfire night, or even Christmas; we must first get past the clocks going back. As the nights draw in and we bid goodbye to the sun, now is the perfect time to make some little changes to your living room layout.

These tweaks will help make your home even more comfortable and cosy by maximizing those extra lamps you’ll be switching on and the cushions you’ll be relaxing with!  Changing a room’s cushions and lampshades to match the season is very easy and can be as simple as buying some new winter jumpers – all you need consider are material, and colour.

Material

Obviously, most of us have neither the time nor inclination to fully redecorate our homes as easily as we might revamp our wardrobes. This doesn’t mean however that we can’t undertake minor edits to make a seasonal statement in our rooms.

Would you wear a linen shirt in November? Probably not, so why not treat yourself and bring some luxurious velvet into your living room – or even dining room or bedroom – this winter. You could equally consider wool if you’d rather a more rustic feel.

Both materials are ideal for cushions and lampshades, mirroring the weightier fabrics seen between now and spring outdoors. These fabrics will easily help your home achieve that midwinter theme.

Colour

Eye catching azure, zesty lime greens and rosy pinks are perfect for spring and summer, but really need to hibernate through autumn and winter.

To suit the coming months, use seasonal colours including mustard, deep maroons and rich dark greens. These not only look great, but when paired with a heftier material, will help to delicately mute the light, making a room feel more atmospheric and relaxed.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns. Where your spring/summer features may showcase delicate plants, bold stripes or even wacky bugs, winter’s can be enhanced with bold plaids or daring geometric designs. Just imagine the statement made by including a couple of country-inspired cushions and tartan lightshades.

These are but a handful of items Blind Direct has in these merrymaking materials and comforting colours.

Change your living room layout for spring

Yes, winter can be a tricky time but remember, spring will return and with it comes the sun, bright colour and lighter days. When the time comes, why not take an hour to gently pack away your winter accessories, and bring your simpler, more colourful pieces back to prominence, adding vibrant tones and lighter materials to reflect the increasingly vivid life outdoors?
