Texture plays a huge role in interior design. Just like colour and pattern impact on the feeling of the room, texture affects the mood of your space, creating interest, depth and personality.

Texture is all about the way things feel when we touch them. However, the texture of a material can also be picked up and appreciated by the eye, influencing our interpretation and appreciation of a particular design feature, whether it’s a lamp shade, a picture frame, or a pair of curtains.

Texture is created by the type of material and the way it’s treated. For example, a beautiful wood grain that is varnished for a warm, detailed finish. Or a heavy wool fabric that is loosely woven for soft, thick finish. The lighting you choose will also have an effect on texture within a room. The glow of a light source can soften materials, highlight their details, or make them appear more hard and harsh.

When designing a space, it’s unlikely that you’ll use a combination of colours without considering how they work together. The same should go for texture. While you needn’t spend hours and hours mulling over the relationship between a thick jute rug, a woven fabric sofa and knitted cushion covers, it’s always worth considering if different textures will coordinate and balance well. By contrasting the right types of textures, you can make certain areas of your interior design stand out.

Textured fabrics are a great way to create a warm, country cottage feeling, but they can also be used to add more interest to a plain contemporary space. No matter your interior tastes, texture is a key component in the design of your room, particularly when it comes to your soft furnishings.
